Hand Lettered Journals & the Make2Share Challenge!

journalspin

Honestly, friends, one of my favorite things about creating is when I get to give things away to people I care about! That’s why I was so excited when I found out about something called the Make2Share challenge! The idea behind it is that you create and give away two things, then the people who received them do the same thing, starting a chain of creating and giving.

All you have to do is: 1) Pick two friends 2) Copy and paste the Make2share Challenge on social media with#make2share 3) Make something special and share it!

Here is the challenge to copy and paste…

“To my friends [ tag 2 friends] I made you these [ handmade items] as part of the #make2share Challenge. In exchange for this random act of giving, all I ask is for you to make and share something special for two people of your choice in the next two weeks. Post a photo and be sure to tag #make2share so we can keep it going forward!”

That’s all there is to it! I couldn’t wait to participate, so today I’m excited to show you the two things I made to give away. Everyone can use a little notebook, whether it’s for sketching, brainstorming, or grocery lists, so I decided to personalize them for my friends. Take a look.

You’ll need:
Moleskine Cahiers Journals {mine are 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ with 64 blank pages}
Tombow fudenosuke soft tip brush pen
Assorted markers

The first recipient I chose is my friend Pinwheel who has been co-teaching the Edible Art class with me at LC’s school on Wednesdays. She is an expert baker who loves all things sweet, so I thought this little phrase, “friends are like sprinkles on the cupcake of life,” would be the perfect thing to letter for her!

I used the fudenosuke marker to write the message in a combination of the brush alphabet and whimsical print {with accent lines added}, then I colored in the printed words with a red dual brush pen. Of course, there had to be a cupcake, so I sketched one and colored it in, adding sprinkles of course!

The other friend I chose to tag enjoys coffee like I do, so I decided to letter one of my favorite phrases: “First I drink the coffee, then I do the things.” For this one, I used the brush alphabet and wrote two of my words with a silver pen. When the ink was dry, I traced around the silver with the finest tip of my Tombow Monotwin to make the words pop.

I absolutely love the effect…I may have to make one like this for myself!

What do you think? Here are a few other different cover designs I’ve created recently. This first one features a grouping of flowers, which you can easily learn to draw from my flower embellishment tutorial.

This one combines a banner and a sketched coffee mug to go with another of my favorite sayings.

Here’s an example using the curved vine embellishment as an accent.

The possibilities really are as endless as your imagination, and this is a gift that anyone would appreciate. So, what do you say? Are you ready to take the Make2Share challenge? You can make journals like I did, or anything at all that you like! Here are a few ideas of things you could make to give away: jewelry, knitted or crocheted items, baked goods, tote bags, pillows, coasters, photo frames, keychains, and more. Remember, just tag your friends and encourage them to play along. For more information check out the Make2Share challenge website or Facebook page. Plus, you can grab free printable tags for your gifts here.  What are you waiting for? Let’s get sharing!
