Hey there, friends! Ever since Little Crafter started school {which he LOVES…yay!!}, we’ve had less time to craft together at home. Which is a major bummer, but at least he’s making some really fun things at school. He is working on drawing a lizard on a branch in art class, he says, but I’m not allowed to see it until he’s all finished. {They’re also learning songs for a school-wide music program in November too, apparently, but I’m not allowed to know anything about the songs so that I will be surprised when I come to see it…so I’ve been told.} However, on the weekends we do have a little spare time in between karate and playdates and other activities to get our craft on. Recently, we got to sample a free Discovery Box from Green Kid Crafts, which contained three separate craft kits Little Crafter couldn’t wait to get his hand on…take a look!
When the box, arrived, Little Crafter tore into it and was excited to see that he’d received the “Backyard Science” Discovery Box. Which is right up his alley. He’s a real outdoorsy kiddo who loves to go on scavenger hunts in the backyard {which was actually one of the suggested activities in the box} and to craft with things he finds in nature. Here’s a peek at what our box contained:
The featured projects were a Sunprint Magnet, a Leaf Pendant, a Nature Collecting Bag, and a Shadow Box. There was an introductory card showing us what the projects were and containing a few more fun activity suggestions on the back. But the best part was that for each craft, there was a separately packaged kit that contained specific instructions as well as the supplies you needed to complete it. Not only were the crafts nature related, the supplies themselves were also eco friendly, like Earth Paint.
The first project Little Crafter wanted to tackle was the Nature Collecting Bag. He was anxious to do the scavenger hunt, so he wanted something to put his treasures in. The supplies we got for that were the small canvas bag, a pack of {very cool} Fabric Fun dye sticks {that Mama wants to play with now}, and a plastic leaf template. We put the leaf inside the bag and LC rubbed the dye stick over top to create his image. Blue, of course. Because everyone knows the best leaves are blue, right?
You can see that he was pretty enthralled with the dye stick…as was I. He repeated the process until he was happy with the front of his bag.
But, in true Little Crafter style, he was far from finished. He turned it over and wanted to add a rainbow. Seriously, how cute is he when he’s concentrating? Aah! I just love this kid!
Once the bag was finished, he wanted to do the scavenger hunt right that minute, but there were two problems. Darkness and rain. Fail. So, instead, I distracted him with project #2: the Leaf Pendant! For this, we got two little packets of air-dry clay, powdered Earth Paint mix, an eco-friendly cup, a small leaf, and a q-tip. We flattened the clay into the shape he wanted, then pressed the leaf down.
Then, we mixed the powdered paint with water in the little cup, stirred it up, and then Little Crafter painted over the whole thing.
When we pulled the leaf back off {while the paint was still wet}, it left the negative image on the clay…pretty cool! We had enough clay to make another one, but our leaf had seen better days by then, so instead we cut out an initial from paper and did the same process. Fun, huh? We poked holes in the top and then let them air dry for about 24 hours.
These projects were perfect for Little Crafter’s age, ability, and interests. The boxes are suited for kids ages 3-8, and each one comes with its own theme relating to arts, crafts, and science!

How fun!! My kids would be all over the reverse painted leaves. Of course the best leaves are blue…. or pink…. or any color other than green. 😉
