Friends, today is a very special edition of Fashion Friday…one that’s close to my heart. Honestly, one of my favorite things about being a blogger is that from time to time it gives me a platform to speak out about an opportunity to make a difference; to be a world-changer. Like this past summer when you joined with me to sew pillowcase dresses for girls in Uganda with Project Yesu. Or when I shared with you about the ConKerr Cancer program that sews pillowcases for hospitalized children. Today is another one of those days…I hope you’ll read on.
A few weeks ago, a young husband and father in our church was suddenly diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. He is currently at John’s Hopkins Hospital receiving intensive chemo and the best possible care, but it’s an incredibly scary time for him and his family. As of right now, his white blood cell count is zero, which believe it or not is what the doctors wanted, because it gives his bone marrow a chance to start producing normal healthy cells. But it also means he’s vulnerable to infection and things could become critical if he gets sick.
Fortunately, this family has been receiving a ton of support financially, which is important since he is self-employed and she is a stay-at-home mama, as well as plenty of meals, love, and prayers from our church community as well as their family, friends, and neighbors. But the journey for them is far from over. Just as it is for every man, woman, and child fighting this terrible disease. You and I can’t magically make it go away, but there are small things we can do…like this.
Kailyn, a Mary Kay consultant Kara knows, is helping kiss cancer away with Lips Against Leukemia.
“My entire passion for this idea started when I was made aware of two people, both having families, that are battling leukemia. I was alerted to both struggles within 2 days and I instantly felt a longing to connect with these and more families throughout the United States. The longing I felt was God leading me to help give others the opportunity to put an end to this evil disease we call cancer. That’s when Lips Against Leukemia first crossed my mind. God put this opportunity in my path and has provided me with the framework of a Christian organization. Together, with the Lord’s hand of blessing, we can provide hope and encouragement to families who need it most.”
Here’s How it Works:
Lips Against Leukemia will donate 20% of sales from any Mary Kay lip product sold! You can also donate Mary Kay lip products to women fighting the battle against cancer. And there is more – TWO women will be sent a lip product as Kailyn is donating one for every one donated. How AWESOME is that?!
To donate, simply go to www.marykay.com/kailyn_
Thanks for helping Kiss Cancer Away!
Now, since it IS Fashion Friday, after all…here are some outfits inspired by the leukemia awareness color, orange. It’s a great color for this time of year, and it goes so well with royal blue, teal, brown, and even pink! I had waaaaay too much fun creating these outfits on Polyvore and have decided that Polyvore is probably too dangerous for me to play with often, but I hope you enjoy the inspiration!
