There’s a Japanese proverb that says, “We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.” Many of you know that in my pre-blogging days, I worked as a ballroom, latin, and swing dance instructor, and one of the things that frustrated me more than anything was when someone would say to me, “I know I have two left feet, so why even try?” And I can’t even count the number of people who told me they would give anything to take dance lessons but their spouse would never do it because they’d be too embarrassed with others watching. How incredibly sad! What a shame to miss out on so much enjoyment for fear of what someone else might say.
Martha Graham once said, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul,” and she’s absolutely right. When we move our bodies to music, however we do it, we can express whatever we’re thinking and feeling, whatever is most real and true about us, in our own very personal way. And that can take a lot of different forms!
Sometimes we might feel playful and happy and just want to get our groove on with some fast fun moves and a little disco fever. I mean, really, who doesn’t want to channel their inner John Travolta?
Sometimes we can use dance to express our anger, our determination, or our passion, like in a fiery tango.
Sometimes we might want to be elegant and sophisticated with graceful movement like a waltz, a quickstep, or a foxtrot.
And really, is there ever a time when it’s not fun to have JAZZ HANDS?!
However we feel, whoever we are, however we move, we can express ourselves through dance. We can get out our frustrations, get energized, exercise, and just plain have fun! There’s no wrong way to do it! That’s why to bring awareness to National Bullying Prevention Month, the folks at Just Dance 2015 and Stomp Out Bullying have partnered to show people everywhere that “it’s okay to dance to your own beat!”
It’s time to stop worrying about what anyone else would say and let your inner dancer loose! Need help getting started? Just Dance 2015 is the perfect game to get the whole family up and moving. Little Crafter is obsessed with playing this game with me, and we both absolutely love it. Not only is it something fun we enjoy doing together, we get to listen to great music and exercise at the same time! Dancing has long been my favorite form of exercising because I feel like it’s working out in disguise…you’re having so much fun you don’t realize you’re working hard too! I have lots of friends who have gotten into running 5K races and half marathons, and I think that’s awesome…for them. Personally, I don’t run unless there’s a bear chasing me, and I once had a gym membership that I used all of two times. I’d rather burn calories while doing something I think is just plain fun! What about you? Is Just Dance 2015 a great fit for your family?
