Change can be an awesome thing…but it can be an incredibly scary thing too, for grownups as well as for kids. Until having Little Crafter, I never realized just how often children have to stretch themselves and do things that seem pretty intimidating…things like the first day of school, making new friends, trying out for a team, and speaking in front of the class.
Three years ago, when LC started kindergarten, he was excited but also scared and overwhelmed. He was shy around his new classmates and the teacher told us that he would sit off by himself at recess rather than walk up to another child and ask him or her to play. I remember talking with him and encouraging him to talk to someone new even if it seemed scary, because he would make some wonderful friends that way. A few days later, the teacher sent me this photo that I have treasured ever since.
He took the risk and it paid off. To this day, he and the gal in the pink skirt are still the best of friends. Stepping out wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it.
Just this week, Little Crafter challenged himself by deciding to turn a story he had written about the class stuffed animal into an e-book that his friends and teachers could download. He wanted to be a published author, so he worked hard to write his story and illustrate it, then asked me to help him make it digital. Putting your work out there is never an easy thing to do; creativity takes courage! But he did it, and he’s so proud of himself.
Like LC, we all know firsthand that sometimes, life’s greatest rewards come from taking chances and moving out of our comfort zones. That’s what Norm of the North, the newest movie from Lionsgate, is all about. The star of the film is Norm, a big-hearted, talkative polar bear from the Arctic. When developers threaten to overtake his home, Norm ventures to NYC with a few helpful friends to take on the Big Apple, big business, and a big identity crisis in the hopes of saving the day! It’s a story all of us can relate to and enjoy. To celebrate the release of the movie, here’s a special giveaway for you to enter, as well as a fun YouTube video to get you and your kids dancing with Norm.
