There’s no question that kids today have more access to technology than we did at their age. Their love for “screen time” can become a challenge, but we can actually take advantage of it as a great resource. My son doesn’t enjoy studying, but he always enjoys playing a game…so if he’s occupying himself with a math game, we both win!
There are tons of great educational apps available, and if you grab them from Amazon Underground, they won’t even cost you a penny. There are no download fees, and there are no paid upgrades either, so they’re all free, all the time. Kids will enjoy playing, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing they’re learning too. Here are a few of our favorite free educational apps for elementary school aged kiddos.
Fourth Grade Learning Games
LC happens to be in 4th grade this year, but this app is available for 1st through 6th grades and features mini-games based on the specified grade’s core concepts. For fourth grade, those include word problems, angles and geometry, fractions, graphs, grammar, spelling, synonyms/antonyms, and more. As they fly spaceships, race cars, and throw darts, they’ll be learning AND having fun.
Need to study a particular set of information? Instead of making physical flashcards, create them here in the app where you can use them again and again. You can also share your flashcards to the database and access over 200,000 sets of flashcards uploaded by other users.
Help this cute panda escape a bully by running, avoiding obstacles, and solving various math problems. This endless running game includes special appearances by mathematicians Pythagoras, Leonhard Euler and Carl Gauss, whose assistance you can summon…that is, if you can answer their questions.
Times Tables – Numberjacks
This multiplication app is made up of four mini-games, each with three levels of difficulty. It’s a great way for younger students to start learning their multiplication facts and for older kids to review. LC’s math teacher wants them to do at least 10 minutes of facts practice each night; this is a great way to make sure it happens!
Here’s a new way to practice a weekly spelling list! Use the words already listed in the app or put in your own, then spell the words correctly to revive this robot.
This interactive geographical adventure will teach students about 144 US cities and 50 capitals as they play in one of three exciting game modes: Practice, Timerace and Multiple Choice Questions.
GeoExpert: USA Geography
In this game, students will learn not only the locations and names of states and their capitals, they’ll also be quizzed on flags, mountains, and rivers. In study mode, they’ll learn more information about each state including population, area, and density.
These are just a few of our favorite educational apps; there are lots to choose from that are perfect for all grade levels in Amazon Underground, and they’re all totally free! Of course, we still like to download “regular” games too, so Little Crafter always enjoys browsing the rest of the free apps to see what he might enjoy.
In fact, he’s excited at the moment about a brand new app; Frozen Free Fall: Icy Shot! From the makers of Disney’s #1 mobile games comes the breathtaking puzzle game – Frozen Free Fall: Icy Shot! Adventure into the stunning world of Frozen to experience an ice–shattering collection of NEW puzzles and excitement! For the first time in forever, you can enjoy Frozen like never before!
I thought it would be fun to interview Little Crafter about his app experiences. Here’s what he had to say about the frustrations of paid apps and in-app purchases:
