How to Draw Patriotic Doodles

Summer is almost here, and with it comes some patriotic holidays here in the USA! Today, I want to share with you how to draw three fun patriotic doodles that you can use to embellish your hand lettered designs.

Patriotic Doodles

These are actually much easier than you think, so even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you really can create them! All illustrations, when you break them down to their simplest parts, are just combinations of shapes. Plus, creating something by hand means that there’s no such thing as perfection; that’s part of the charm. So, relax, grab some markers, and let’s take a look at how to draw our own doodle versions of a firework, Uncle Sam’s hat, and the American flag!

You’ll need:

Black, red, and blue markers

White gel pen (for stars on the flag)

Feel free to use a pencil and eraser too!

Sketch paper

Firework Doodle

Step 1: Start by drawing a set of parallel lines.

Step 2: Draw an oval on one end and a curving line on the other to create a cylinder shape.

Step 3: Add a short line to the top and a series of dashed lines coming from it. Also, draw a series of slightly curving lines along the cylinder to create stripes.

Step 4: Add color.

That’s all there is to it!

Uncle Sam’s Top Hat

Step 1: Draw two vertical lines that are slightly closer together at the bottom than the top. Add a curving line to connect them and form the top of the hat.

Step 2: Draw a semicircle around the bottom of the shape for the hat brim.

Step 3: Add a slightly curved horizontal line to form a band around the hat.

Step 4: Divide the top portion of the hat with vertical lines.

Step 5: Color and add detail on the band. I wrote “USA,” but you could also add stars, dots, or anything else you like. You’ll need to use a white gel pen to create the white-on-blue effect.

United States Flag

The real American flag has fifty stars, one to represent each state, and thirteen stripes to represent the original 13 colonies. For our purposes, we just want to doodle something that looks similar, so we’re not going to worry about exact accuracy, although if you want to do so on your own, feel free.

Step 1: Draw two curving horizontal lines as shown above.

Step 2: Connect those lines with two vertical lines, one on each side. Draw lines to form a box in the upper left corner of the flag.

Step 3: Divide the remaining part of the flag into horizontal stripes. The lines should match the waving shape of the outline.

Step 4: Color the box blue and every other stripe red.

Step 5: Add dots or tiny stars to the blue box using a white gel pen. If you don’t have a gel pen, you can sketch small circles or stars first, then color blue around the outlines, leaving those spots white.

Ta-da! Now you have three festive, patriotic doodles you can use to embellish your holiday hand lettered designs! These are also super cute on envelopes, signs, cards, and more. Be sure to share pictures of what you create with us in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook group!
