Free Hand Lettering Practice Sheets: V

Friends, we are down to the final five letters in our in-depth look at the brush lettered alphabet! Today, we’re looking at how to form the Brush Script V.

If you’re just joining in and are new to brush style hand lettering, you may want to start by going back to the first post in the series, where you’ll learn about basic technique and practice creating upstrokes and downstrokes with your brush pen. Otherwise, let’s jump in and take a look at the letter V!

Drawing a Capital Brush Script V

The left side of the capital V starts with a quick upstroke followed by a downstroke that goes all the way from the cap height to the baseline. On the right side, there’s a diagonal upstroke with a little loop right at the end.

Here are two other variations you can consider if you prefer a different style. One is very simple, just a downstroke and an upstroke with no loops or embellishments. The other is missing the loop on the right side. As always, feel free to play around with your own ideas and variations as you develop your own lettering style.

Drawing a Lowercase Brush Script V

Forming a lowercase “v” is exactly the same technique, it’s just half as tall as its capital counterpart.

If you prefer to leave off the loop, you can simply finish off the letter with a horizontal stroke.
