DIY Ugly Sweater: Stockings & Stuff

DIY Ugly Sweater

‘Tis the season for Ugly Sweaters, and in our family, we think that creating our own is way more fun than buying them! You’d be surprised just how easy it is to put one together using an assortment of decorations you might already have, or that you can purchase inexpensively at a thrift or bargain store. Last week, I shared how to create Scout’s “O Christmas Tree” themed ugly sweater, complete with an elf and little gifts. Today, we’re going to look at how to make Little Crafter’s Stocking themed sweater that turns him into a festive mantle. Take a look…

Materials:

Solid color sweater or shirt (we found ours at Goodwill)

Stocking

Miniature stockings

Tinsel Garland

Fabric Paint

Small plastic ornaments

Scissors

Glitter

Glue

Needle and thread and/or hot glue and glue gun

Making Your Ugly Sweater

Step 1: Cut a piece of garland that is long enough to cover the length of both sleeves and the front of the shirt.

Sew or use hot glue to secure the garland in place.

Step 2: Sew a stocking to the front of the shirt.

I recommend sewing or gluing all the way around the edges so that it stays down and doesn’t flap around when you walk. Make sure to leave the hole at the top open so you can stuff it full of goodies!

Step 3: Add a name or message to the front of the stocking with fabric paint.

Step 4: Attach miniature stockings.

I put one on each arm and two at the bottom of the shirt.

Step 5: Add ornaments to the garland.

Also, feel free to add bows, glitter, and other little gaudy additions just about anywhere you like! Don’t forget to stuff the stocking with a candy cane, a plush animal, or anything else you can think of.

When you’re done, you’ll have a totally gaudy, totally fabulous creation that will be the talk of any Ugly Sweater Party! What do you think? This is so easy and inexpensive to create, and definitely captures the festive holiday spirit.
