Top 10 Quilt Patterns for Beginners
If you’re new to quilting, you may be wondering where to start. Here are ten easy quilt patterns, all using basic skills and pre-cut fabric packs, that are incredibly beginner friendly. Some are free downloads, others are available for purchase, and a few are found in my book Quilting for Everyone. I hope you find one (or more!) that inspires you.

Patchwork Rag Quilt
This introductory quilting project is perfect for beginners for two big reasons. One is that you quilt each square as you go by sewing an “x” through all three layers before piecing the rows. The other is that there’s no binding required! It’s pre-cut friendly, perfect for a pack of 10” squares.

Simple Patchwork Squares
This sweet little baby quilt is a great introduction to quilting without being an intimidating size. It’s quick and easy to sew together using a pre-cut pack of 5” squares, and there’s no binding.

Alternating 4-Patch
This quilt takes basic patchwork skills and elevates the look by alternating larger squares with a “4-patch” block made from four 5” pre-cut squares.

Sashed Squares
Create a simple but lovely quilt by joining pre-cut 10” squares with strips of sashing in between.

Storytime Squares
This square lap-size quilt features pre-cut 5” squares in a concentric square pattern with sashing strips in between.

Square in a Square Quilt
To create the blocks for this vibrant quilt, just add sashing strips to a 5” square. Join the blocks together for a fun geometric pattern.

Simple Stacks Quilt
This quilt is made by cutting 10” squares in half and stacking them to form long rows, which are then joined with long sashing strips.

Fence Rail Quilt
Make this quilt with a jelly roll (pack of 2.5” x WOF strips) that are sewn together in sets of three and cut into blocks.

Modern Triangles
This modern quilt pattern features a triangle template, and comes together quickly.

Simple Spools Quilt
Perfect for a confident beginner, this quilt takes your skills to the next level beyond simple patchwork and introduces some sewing on the diagonal to create the spool ends. It’s still pre-cut friendly, featuring a pack of 10” squares as the spool centers.
