Sunflower Wreath

Sunflowers are my favorite flowers! They’re so cheerful and bright, and they are wonderful for home decor, especially in the summer and fall months. Here’s how to make an easy sunflower wreath for the front door.

How to Make a Sunflower Wreath

This wreath is easy to assemble, and mostly just requires tying strips of fabric into knots! Just gather the materials below, and you’ll be ready to create your own.

Materials

  • Oly*Fun fabric – Lemon Drop
  • Black or black and white print fabric (I used a fat quarter)
  • Metal Wreath Ring (mine is 13.8”)
  • Poly-Fil
  • Scissors and/or rotary cutter and mat
  • Quilting ruler
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Large cardboard box (at least the size of your ring)
  • Pencil

Instructions

Cut your yellow fabric into 3”x15” strips.

I needed 29 strips for my 13.8” ring. If you are using a smaller ring, you’ll need fewer strips. The particular material I used is called Oly*Fun by Fairfield World. I love using it for this type of project, because it’s good for outdoor as well as indoor use. It also won’t fray, tear, or fade. You can measure your strips and cut with scissors, but I find it much easier to use a rotary cutter instead.

Tie the strips to the metal ring.

Fold each strip in half, then wrap the folded end around the center of the ring. Pull the cut ends through the loop to tighten.

Continue until your ring is completely covered.

Cut a cardboard circle the same size as the ring.

I used the top of a cardboard box. Make sure not to use your fabric scissors on the cardboard! To get the right size, trace your metal ring.

Add a small amount of Poly-Fil on top of the circle, then wrap it with a piece of black and white fabric.

Use hot glue to secure the edges of the fabric to the back of your circle.

Glue the circle behind the ring.

My ring already had a leather hanger attached, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll want to attach some type of twine or ribbon loop.

Now your sunflower wreath is complete and ready to hang on the door! What a cheerful way to welcome guests and family.

Crafting Tips

  • While I used a 13.8” hoop, you can use whatever size works best for your door/wall space. Try creating sunflowers of different sizes!
  • For the center of your flower, you can use any black or black and white print fabric you like. Changing the fabric will make your flower unique.
  • It’s always quicker, easier, and more accurate to cut fabric with a rotary cutter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much Poly-Fil should I use?

There’s no right or wrong amount. The more you use, the puffier the flower center will be.

Where can I find Oly*Fun?

Check your local JoAnn fabrics or other fabric/craft store. You can also find it online at fairfieldworld.com.

What if I don’t have/can’t find Oly*Fun?

You can use a different yellow fabric instead.
