How to Make a Scrappy Sunflower

This project is quick, easy, and inexpensive. Just gather the materials below and you’ll have your own scrappy sunflower (or a whole bouquet) in no time.

Materials

  • canning jar lid with ring
  • yellow fabric
  • black or brown fabric
  • scissors
  • Poly-Fil
  • wooden dowel
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • floral tape (optional)

Instructions

Cut your yellow fabric into about 20 strips that are 6 1/2” long and 1” wide.

You may need more or fewer strips, depending on the size of your ring.

Tie your strips around the ring until it’s completely covered.

Holding your ring right side up, fold your strip in half and place the folded end through the center of the ring. Thread the cut ends of the strip through the folded end and pull tight to create a knot.

Repeat for each strip until your ring is covered with fabric and the metal is no longer visible.

Place a small amount of Poly-Fil on top of the center of the lid. Then, wrap the lid with your black or brown fabric and hot glue it in place.

This will create the flower’s center.

Place the center part of the lid inside the ring and push until it snaps into place.

If you’d like to add glue as well, you can, but it’s not usually necessary.

(Optional) Wrap your dowel with green floral tape.

Other options are to paint the dowel or to leave it as natural wood.

Glue the dowel to the back of the ring.

I glued mine in two places, one at the top of the ring and one at the bottom, to make it more sturdy.

When your flower is finished, you can display it in any way you like and add it to your home decor.

Crafting Tips

  • When working with hot glue, use a popsicle stick or a pencil to push the fabric down rather than your finger to prevent accidental burns. Since fabric is woven, glue can easily seep through the tiny holes and onto your skin.
  • To save time and energy, use a rotary cutter to trim your fabric into the 6 1/2” x 1” strips. It’s more accurate than scissors and much quicker, too.
  • Feel free to combine several different yellow fabrics for a variegated effect.
  • Try creating a whole bouquet of these sunflowers and displaying them all together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do with the rest of the jar after I craft with the lid?

One option is to use the jar as the container for displaying your flower! Or, turn it into a fairy lantern using pressed flowers or stickers.

Is this craft good for kids?

Very young crafters will need supervision with cutting and the hot glue, but otherwise, kids can certainly do this project.
