DIY Percussion Set with Pringles Summer Jam

Do you love music? Does anyone in your family play an instrument? Here in the Artsy Family, music is a huge part of our lives. I mean, after all, one of the many hats I wear is that of a professional ballroom dancer! Besides that, I started playing the piano at the age of three and have loved to sing ever since I could talk. As many of you know, I’ve performed in local musicals like Shrek and The Sound of Music, and I’ve also been part of numerous choral groups, including two show choirs. I can’t imagine life without music, so I’ve been thrilled to watch Little Crafter become excited about it too. He has a little trouble carrying a tune, but the boy definitely has rhythm! Lately, he’s become obsessed with learning to play the drums. I think it’s a great plan, but before we invested in a full drum set, I wanted to test things out a little and give him a less expensive percussion set to play around with. Here’s how we created our own DIY percussion instruments so he can jam to his heart’s content.

The Drum

– small empty cardboard box
– decorative tape
– scissors

To create the “drum,” we used a small box I had received in the mail when I got a shipment of jewelry making supplies. We tucked the flaps down tightly inside the empty box so that the bottom of the drum is open. You can really use any size box you want, but I like that this one doesn’t take up a lot of space…unlike some of LC’s toys! He chose three different patterns of decorative tape {you know, the kind that quacks…} and decided where he wanted each one to go. I cut the strips and helped him position them, then he pressed them down. We tucked our ends around the bottom of the box.

The Drumsticks

– 1 pair drumsticks
– decorative tape
– permanent marker
– scissors

Although I wasn’t ready to invest in a full drum set, it’s only right to use a “real” pair of drumsticks! Of course, you can substitute dowel rods if you like, but you can get these Stagg 5A Birch sticks for less than $5, and it makes a kiddo {or a mama} feel like a legit drummer. The sound is so much more official, and it’s also just plain adorable. Little Crafter chose the same three tapes and we used them to wrap the sticks all the way up to where they began tapering.

Percussion Set

Then, we used blue permanent marker to color the wood all the way up to the top, as well as on the very bottom of each stick.

The Shaker

Percussion Set

– 1 empty Pringles® can with lid
– decorative tape
– scissors
– dry rice or beans

Wrap the outside of the can in tape to decorate it, then fill the can with rice or beans and place the lid securely on top. Then, shake! You can also use this as a secondary drum, because it will make a different sound than the box.
