One of my favorite things about blogging is that it has given me the opportunity to meet some of the sweetest, most talented people I know. One of those people is Bev McCullough, the artist and designer behind Flamingo Toes. She is an author, quilter, and fabric designer who has the ability to take just about anything and turn it into a beautiful piece of embroidery. Recently, we discovered that we have the same favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art, and we decided to collaborate to turn it into artwork. Here’s what happened.
First, I created a hand lettered design using the Apple Pencil on my iPad. I used basic Brush Script for the words and drew a circle of vines around them, adding a few flowers in the bottom left of the design. Then, I emailed it to Bev.
She worked her magic, choosing colors and stitch types to make the design come to life. I love everything about it, but I think my favorite part are those gorgeous, vibrant flowers! I also love how she used a patterned fabric as the background.
To create your own beautiful embroidered hymn art, here’s what you need to do:
1. Download the free printable/pattern here.
2. Head to Flamingo Toes for Bev’s color chart and stitch guide!
She has a full tutorial for making your own embroidery hoop art from start to finish.
Of course, you’re also welcome to print out an extra copy to frame and display in your home, church, or office. Just download the printable, then use your favorite photo editor or printing service to print it out and pop it in a frame. It’s sized to 8×10, but you can resize it to any dimensions you like.
I hope you love this design as much as we do, and I can’t wait to see what you create with it! Be sure to check out the brand new line of fabric Bev designed, called Singing in the Rain!
As always, if you like this project, be sure to Pin it and share with your friends. If you create your own version, we’d love to see it; just hop over to the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook group and show us a photo!
You can find more hand lettered printables, along with hand lettering instruction and free practice pages here on the site as well as in my four lettering books. Happy creating!
