Free Hand Lettering Practice Sheets: L
L is for lettering, and chances are, if you’re reading this post, you want to practice your own hand lettering skills! In this series, we’re focusing on the Brush Script alphabet, which involves controlling the pressure we apply to a brush pen in order to create contrasting thick and thin lines. If you’re new to brush style lettering, you’ll want to check out the basic instructions and brush strokes first. If you’re familiar with the technique, let’s jump back into the alphabet and learn how to form the letter “L.”
L is one of my favorite letters since it’s the beginning of my last name! Today, we’re going to look at how to form it in both its capital and lowercase forms and how to do a bit of embellishing.
Drawing a Capital Brush Script L
The standard capital L begins with a loop and a downstroke just like so many of our other letters, including “b,” “h,” “f,” and “k.” At the bottom of the downstroke, we finish it off by bringing our pen up and around to the right, forming another little loop. You can change the appearance of the letter by making the loops larger or smaller.
If you prefer a slightly more print-style L, simply draw a plain downstroke to start with the small loop at the bottom.
Drawing a Lowercase Brush Script L
Since we have been practicing the basic loop shape for so many of our other letters already, the lowercase “l” is going to be a piece of cake! At the bottom of the downstroke, you’ll curve up and to the right to allow the “l” to connect with the next letter.
There are several ways to add a little extra flair to this letter. First, you can vary the size and position of your loop. Try making it larger than usual and extending it out to the right like we did for some of our embellished “b,” “h,” and “k” shapes. Another option is to add a spiral or loop to your upstroke right at the beginning of the letter. Or, you can try having the downstroke cross the upstroke at a point close to the bottom of the letter rather than near the center, as shown in the third example below.
