Oh Say Can You Sew Along – Cutting
Let’s move to the next step in our sew along! Now that you have your fabric, it’s time to cut it so we can create blocks. I recommend using a rotary cutter and mat along with a quilting ruler for cutting, because it’s so much quicker, easier, and more precise than scissors.

Note: WOF stands for width of fabric. Typically, the width of quilting cotton ranges from 42”-44.” When cutting, we will cut strips that are the entire width of the fabric, then sub-cut those strips into smaller pieces.
Red Fabric
Total:
1 1/2 yards (I used Gallantly Streaming from my Oh Say Can You Sew collection)
Cutting:
Cut 5 strips that are 10” x WOF. Sub-cut (20) 10” x 10” squares.
White Fabric
Total:
2 1/2 yards (I split mine into 1 1/2 yards of Dancing Daisies White for the stripe blocks, and 1 yard of solid white for the star blocks)
Cutting:
For stripe blocks –
Cut 5 strips that are 10” x WOF. Sub-cut (20) 10” squares.
For star blocks –
Cut 7 strips that are 3 1/8” x WOF. Sub-cut (80) 3 1/8” squares.
Blue Fabric
Total:
3 1/3 yards (I split mine into 1 2/3 yards of Bright Stars Navy for the outer part of the star blocks, and 2/3 yards of Poppy Fields Navy for the centers of the square blocks.)
Cutting:
For outer part of star blocks –
Cut 10 strips measuring 2 1/2” x WOF. Sub-cut (160) 2 1/2” squares. Cut 6 strips measuring 5 1/2” x WOF. Sub cut (40) 5 1/2” squares.
For block centers –
Cut 5 strips that are 4 1/2” x WOF. Sub-cut (40) 4 1/2” squares.
So, in summary, when you’re finished with your quilting, here are the cut pieces you should have.
(20) 10” squares of red
(20) 10” squares of white 1 (stripe)
(80) 3 1/8” squares of white 2 (star)
(160) 2 1/2” squares of blue 1 (outer)
(40) 5 1/2” squares of blue 1 (outer
(40) 4 1/2” squares of blue 2 (inner)
Once your cutting is complete, we’ll move on to piecing our stripe blocks! Stay tuned and make sure you’re part of the Facebook group.
