Potty Boot Camp

It’s time.
Time to say good-bye to diapers here in One Artsy Mama land.
We’ve tried potty training several times already, but Little Crafter wasn’t interested and so we let the matter drop.  He promised me {a pinky promise, no less} that he’d start using the potty on his third birthday.  Which came.  And went.  No potty.  At his 3 year well visit, the pediatrician said there’s no reason why a child as smart as Little Crafter is shouldn’t be potty trained.  Add that to the fact that I’m just plain tired of changing diapers, and what do you get?
Yup, that’s right.  Boot camp time, and there are no more diapers.
We told him he gets to wear underpants all day, and his favorite boots too.
We’ve made up some special ‘boot camp’ songs…you know the typical “Sound off, 1, 2” chant?
Well, sing this to that tune:
No more diapers, no, no way!
Potty boot camp starts today.
Potty {boot camp}
Potty boot camp,
No more diapers under there,
Big boys wear fun underwear.
Potty {boot camp}
Potty boot camp,
We’re going to spend the whole day at home, playing games, pretending to camp in our makeshift “fort”, telling stories, watching movies, and using that potty.  And, as an added incentive, we have “mystery rewards” for him each time he successfully makes it to the potty.
Most of these fun things were graciously donated by Grandma and Pop-Pop.
{thanks mom}
We have a new Clifford movie and a stuffed T-Bone since he’s a Clifford fanatic, Mater socks, a Mater tattoo, a new book, the Ghostbusters shirt he’s been begging for so he can be twins with daddy, and a new CD by his favorite band, Milkshake.

I wrapped each one separately and each time he uses the potty, he’ll get to choose a bag or box and have what’s inside.  What’s that you say?  Why yes, yes it IS flat out bribery.  And I am okay with that.  At this point, I’ll do whatever it takes.
I’ll let you know how it goes…

  1. Good luck! I can’t wait to hear how it works. My daughter was getting really good this summer and then decided she wanted her diapers back or at least decided not to tell us anymore and was making a mess everywhere. I threatened with diapers again and she said she wanted them. So I told her when she was ready she could do it and to let me know.

  2. Thank you for posting this. Liam will be three in FEbruary and is SOOO smart. Smart enough to tell his sunday school teachers he has to potty, and smart enough to trick us into believing he doesnt know how to at home. ERRR we are potty bootcamping this weekend! Wish me luck!
