What inspires you? What things in your life fuel your passion and creativity? Personally, sometimes I get inspired by things I see. Sometimes I’m inspired by other people. Sometimes being in a certain place or smelling a certain scent can get the wheels turning in my brain and I come up with new ideas.

Key to My Heart Necklace

The idea for my latest jewelry creation came about as I was relaxing in a favorite spot in my house and smelling the new Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle by Glade®. I’ve been missing the beach ever since we got home from vacation, so this scent {which is designed to be a seamless blend of water, air and earth all collected together} really appealed to me.  Bright blooms and sweet peach merge with touches of amber, musk and woods to create an invigorating aroma…the kind of scent that makes you want to get up and create!

I picked my Glade® Blue Odyssey™ Large Candle up at my local Walmart last week; it’s a new larger size (9.2 oz) which burns for up to 60 hours.

No matter where I place the candle, it helps me to feel energized and ready to create my next project. Here’s a look at the most recent project I came up with, the Key to my Heart Pendant!

I created this piece to represent what I’m most passionate about, my family. The key charm represents the fact that they hold the keys to my heart, and I accented it with beads representing each family member’s birthstone color, as well as a little family tree charm. Here’s how you can create something similar.

Materials:

– key charm
– family tree charm
– assorted beads
– head pins
– jump rings
– antique gold chain
– lobster clasp
– wire cutters and needle nose pliers

Step 1: Place each bead on a head pin and form a wire loop. If you’ve never made jewelry before, check out my Beading Basics tutorial for step-by-step photo instructions on how to create wire loops.

Step 2: Make a chain of three jump rings. Attach the bottom ring to the key charm, then place your beads where you like them on the various rings. I wanted my beads to hang at varying heights, so I put the green one on the center ring and the other two on the top one.
Tip: Remember to always open and close jump rings by gently twisting the ends away from each other rather than pulling them apart.

Step 3: Attach the family tree charm to the center jump ring.

Step 4: Cut a piece of chain the length you want your necklace to be and attach it to the top jump ring of your pendant. Ideally, the chain will slide through the ring. My chain was too thick, so I actually had to attach the jump ring into a specific link of the chain.

Step 5: Add a lobster clasp and jump ring to the cut ends of the chain to secure it closed.
