Can you remember the excitement of going to the grocery store as a child and heading down the cereal aisle to choose what you wanted for the week? You’d carefully look at the boxes, weighing your options, then excitedly make your selection. Once the box was in your cart, you could hardly wait to get home and rip it open, not just because you loved eating the cereal, but because of…the prize inside!
Oh, those cereal prizes. I remember getting all kinds of fun things from those carefully chosen boxes. Spoons with cartoon characters on them. Sticky hands that I got in trouble for flinging at the painted walls. And best of all, plastic figurines of favorite characters from movies or television shows. Then one day, everything began to change. Instead of prizes in the box, suddenly you had to start saving UPC codes and mailing them away to get a prize 6 weeks later. Eventually, even those kinds of prizes mostly faded away and the fun of the cereal aisle did too. Just a few months ago, hubby and I were reminiscing about the “good old days” when cereal had prizes, and what a bummer it was that Little Crafter didn’t get to experience that.
Then I heard the news. General Mills is bringing the fun back with a special toy available in specially marked family-size packages of your favorite cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Reese’s Puffs, Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Golden Grahams! And it’s not just any toy. It’s a 7th Minion Toy to celebrate the release of the new Minions movie this summer! If your kids are anything like Little Crafter, who has serious Minion fever, they’re going to be thrilled to see which of the seven different figures they find!
We were so excited we couldn’t stop with just one box, so we bought a few at Walmart {which is the only place these specially marked boxes are available} and brought them home to create a special Minion Mix. Little Crafter dug right in and found his toys, which are now packaged in their own wrapping and on the outside of the cereal bag…so much easier than having to fish through all the cereal like we had to do as kids!
LC was thrilled that he got two different figures and his first comment was, “I can put these on my backpack!” He also thought it was extra-awesome when he realized that they can connect to each other at the elbows.
Once he’d had a few minutes to play with the figures, it was time to get to work creating the Minion Mix! Here’s how we did it…
Minion Mix
You’ll need:
Honey Nut Cheerios
Trix {specifically yellow and blue}
Small pretzels
Yellow gummy candies
Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl, using more or less of each depending on your personal preferences. If you like, you can always add in other things too, like popcorn, peanuts, or other yellow and blue candies.
Then all that’s left to do is enjoy…which LC certainly did.
