Super-Easy DIY Locker Magnets

School is already back in session in many parts of the country, and here in Maryland, we’ll be starting up again September 3. I’m hoping my kids have a great school year, but not just academically. My real wish for my boys as they begin 7th grade is that they’ll stay positive and kind, believing in themselves no matter what comes their way.

Last year, one of their teachers had the class write positive messages on post-it notes to stick inside their lockers where they’d see them every day. The only problem was that they kept falling down! This year, I thought it would be fun to have the boys create their own DIY Locker Magnets to help hold up the messages I want them to see. Here are four super-easy DIY Locker Magnets that kids of all ages can create using things you find around the house!

Creating Google Eye, Scrabble Tile, and Pom-Pom Locker Magnets

These first three types of magnets couldn’t be easier to make. Literally all you have to do is take an object and glue a magnet to the back! Most magnet tape is actually adhesive, so you can just cut a piece that fits, peel off the backing and stick it to your object. For our magnets, we used Scrabble tiles, pom-poms, and google eyes. How fun are these?!

You can use Scrabble tiles that spell out a favorite school subject or hobby, a name, or a phrase. Or, you can use totally random letters. If you don’t want to take the tiles out of your game, you can order letter tiles on websites like Etsy. Google eyes come in all sizes and colors, and so do pom-poms. Both are readily available at craft stores or the craft section of your local Walmart if you don’t already have some around the house.

It can be fun to color-coordinate your magnets; we went with teal, green, and neutrals, or you can use any and every color of the rainbow. The real fun is in letting kids personalize them and express their personal style!

Creating Clothespin Magnets

Clothespin magnets are a stylish way to hang things in a locker, and they can be totally personalized by using different colors and patterns of decorative tape. Stripes, polka dots, glitter, animal print…whatever you love! To create these, you’ll need:

Ordinary clothespins (any size will work)

Your favorite decorative tape (available at craft stores, online, and in big box stores)

Magnetic tape

Scissors

Glue (if your magnetic tape isn’t adhesive)

Step 1: Place your clothespin face down on the sticky side of the tape.

I like to line up the edge of the clothespin with the edge of the tape to make sure that if there’s a design on the tape it stays straight.

Step 2: Use scissors to trim off the excess tape.

Step 3: Attach a strip of magnetic tape to the back using glue or the pre-attached adhesive, and voila! Your magnets are ready to use.

These are great for holding small notes, schedules, and photos!

They also work for displaying Pokemon cards, postcards, artwork, or ticket stubs from a trip on the Hogwarts Express.

All of these magnets are incredibly inexpensive and simple to create. Kids of all ages can easily make and personalize them, and they will brighten up the inside of any locker. With their favorite photos and some positive words on display, I hope my kids find themselves smiling when they make locker stops during the school day.
