2020 Toilet Paper Ornament with Sculpey

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been unlike any other year we’ve ever experienced. Here’s how you can make your own commemorative ornament using a symbol that represents what the year has been like…a roll of toilet paper. This Toilet Paper Ornament is super-easy for crafters of all ages to make using Sculpey Oven-Bake clay. Take a look…

You’ll need:

Sculpey clay: white

Basic clay tools (rolling pin and cutter)

Eye pin or wire

Permanent marker (I used the Tombow MonoTwin)

Cord, twine, or ribbon

Scissors

Step 1: Roll your clay into a log shape.

I made mine about the size of my roller tool, but it’s totally up to you what size ornament you want to create.

Step 2: Place your clay log vertically on your work surface, then roll it with the roller tool.

You can make it as thin as you like. The thinner you roll it, the more it will look like “real” toilet paper!

Step 3: Use a clay tool or plastic knife to create a strip with straight edges on all four sides.

The width of your clay strip will be the width of your toilet paper roll. I placed a ruler on top of my clay to give me a straight guide line on one side, then moved it around to cut each of the other sides.

Step 4: Start at one end and gently roll your strip around itself.

I left a bit of mine unrolled so it would hang down and provide the perfect place to write “2020” later.

Step 5: Use a flat edge tool to gently score lines around the outside of the roll.

This gives the illusion of separate squares of toilet paper!

Step 6: Push an eye pin into the top of the ornament.

You can hang it in any direction you like (the age old debate, over or under!) but I chose to hold my roll as shown in the photo below. If you don’t have an eye pin, you can form one with wire.

Step 7: Bake your ornament.

Follow the instructions on the packaging (I baked mine at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes).

Step 8: Use a permanent marker to write “2020” on the bottom of the ornament.

Step 9: Place a piece of cord or thin ribbon through the hole in the eye pin (or just add an ornament hook) as a hanger.

And there you have it, the perfect symbol for the year we’ve all just had!
