Easy Layer Cake Rag Quilt
Whether you’re new to quilting or just looking for a simple and quick project, this is your sign to make a Rag Quilt! The technique is really easy, and if you use a layer cake (pre-cut 10” squares), you won’t believe how quickly the quilt comes together.

How to Make a Layer Cake Rag Quilt
This quilt is meant to have a “lived-in”, worn feel, which means that you don’t have to worry about little imperfections. It’s known for the frayed, ruffled seams in between the blocks and around the edges – which also means there’s no binding! Just grab the materials below and let’s get started. I made my quilt using 42 squares (7 rows of 6), but if you want a larger or smaller quilt, you can use whatever number of squares you like.

Materials
42 – 10” fabric squares for the quilt front (I used my Bloom and Sew collection for Andover Fabrics)
42 – 10” fabric squares for the quilt back
42 – 9” batting squares

PRO TIP: You can cut your own 10” squares from yardage, OR you can use two layer cakes (packages of 42 pre-cut 10” squares) and save yourself lots of cutting time!
Crafting Tips
- It’s easy to make your blanket larger or smaller by adjusting the number of blocks you use.
- For a different look, you can use the same technique, but use 5” squares instead of 10″, you’ll just need a lot more of them to make the same size quilt.
- Some crafters like using flannel instead of batting.

If you try making your own rag quilt, I’d love to se how it turns out! Make sure to share your project photos in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook Group so we can all inspire one another. See you there!
