Foundation: Ch 10
Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and each chain across, turn {9 sc}
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first sc and in each across, turn {9 sc} *Repeat Row 2 until your piece reaches approximately 8 3/4″.
This length will comfortably fit a Starbucks cup. I recommend having an empty cup on hand that’s the size you want to use your cozy for so that you can determine how long it needs to be to wrap the cup completely with just a bit of overlap.
Buttonhole: ss in first four sc, chain 6, skip fifth sc and ss in last four sc
This will accomodate a 25-28mm button. If your button is smaller or larger than that, adjust the number of chains that form your loop.
Border: 2 sc in corner stitch, sc along long edge evenly until you reach the corner.
2 sc in corner stitch, sc along short edge,
1 sc in bottom corner and evenly in every stitch until you reach the final corner,
sc once in corner and in first 3 ss, ss in 4th sc,
ss in each ch of the button loop,
ss in next ss, sc in final 3 stitches
Join, cut, and tuck ends.
Sew your button in place. I recommend wrapping your cozy around a cup to see where the button needs to go.
Ta-da! You made a coffee cozy!
You can totally change the look of your cozy by using different colors and a variety of fun buttons! The Erlinda, pictured below, is one of my absolute favorite buttons ever; I love the natural look {it’s made from coconut!} and the gorgeous flower!
And, I know you’re wondering, so let me answer your question…yes, that is a bona-fide Starbucks cup that once held a very real and delectable salted caramel hot chocolate. Nowadays, the cup lives in my laundry room {sans the cool cozy} and collects spare change and the occasional $5 bill I find in my guys’ pockets.
So, what are you waiting for? Get going! Go make yourself a cozy…mine took about an hour, I think, which flew by while I was watching cartoons with LC. These are great gifts to whip up for a friend, and hey, Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation are around the corner…why not make a few extras? If you make one {or more!}, I’d love to see! Send me your picture via email {dancers4life{at}gmail{dot}com}, or share it via Instagram {@oneartsymama}, Twitter {@oneartmama}, or Facebook! I’d be thrilled if I got enough to make a little collage I could share! If you blog about it, send the link too, so I can promote it.

Amy this looks awesome! Someone sent me one of these as a gift, and I love it! I need to learn how to crochet so I can make some too!
Chelsea Day says
This is AWESOME!!! I just started learning some basic crochet and was looking for an online resource to help guide me the rest of the way. So glad I stumbled on this!

OOoooo, I’m so excited – I’m a gunna try this!! As a general rule, if the pattern is square or rectangular, then I can follow it. Start increasing/decreasing with HDSC-XYZ, then I glaze over and give the yarn to the cat.
Stopping by from OPC, pinning!!

Hey Amy! I love your pattern for this great gift! Curious if you would mind if I use this pattern and sell my creations on my website?
Amy Latta says
Hi, Angela,
Of course you are free to sell what you make. I would just appreciate a linkback somewhere saying where you got the pattern. 🙂 Good luck!
Angela C says
Thanks Amy, I appreciate your response. I will definitely do a linkback. I just noticed too that I had a 2nd comment go through, my fault. My computer was on the fritz!

Amy, Thank for such a ding-dang darling pattern!
Sandi says
Thank you.
Abby says
By “ss” do you mean slip stitch? I’ve never seen that abbreviation before, it’s usually sl st.
Thanks
dancers4life says
Yep, that’s what it is! 🙂
Cindy says
Is this only for a TALL size Starbucks cup?
Do you happen to have a pattern for a coffee mug with a handle?
dancers4life says
Actually, it fits grande cups too; they’re the same width, just different heights. 🙂 I think it would work on a Venti also…or any to-go type cup. You can change it based on where you place the button too. I do not have a pattern for a mug with a handle, BUT my friend ChiWei does! http://www.1dogwoof.com/2012/11/warm-and-toasty-crocheted-mug-cozies.html

Thanks so much for sharing this pattern and for the lessons! I’ve been learning how to crochet from various blogs and youtube videos. This coffee cozy is the first project I tried and it was fun and easy to do! Will be making your boot cuffs next!
dancers4life says
Oh, I am SO happy to hear that!! I would love to see a picture of how yours turned out!

dancers4life says
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that, Alicia! I’d love to see a photo of how yours turned out!!

What kind of yarn are you using? I made one last night and it was so stretchy… are they normally stretchy? I am SO SO new to crochet this is my first time trying to follow a pattern… Love the design and love the item!!! Thanks so much
dancers4life says
I usually use Lion Brand…what kind do you have? It will be stretchy, yes, which is good because then it will fit whatever cup you have!
Shellie says
Did you use cotton or acrylic yarn?
dancers4life says
Honestly, I forget! I *think* it was cotton…
Jane K says
As a beginning crocheter, I am having trouble finding out exactly what you mean by a 1/6 hook. If you would clarify, as I cannot find any reference to your size in any conversion chart. Thank you 🙂
dancers4life says
Hi, Jane, It’s actually “I” as in the letter, not a 1. Hooks are sized by number and/or letter. So, you can look either for a size 6 or a size “I.” I hope that helps.
alex says
how long did this take to make? im looking for a quick design for a charity even. thanks 🙂
dancers4life says
Honestly, it all depends on how quickly you crochet. I tend to be a fast stitcher, so it took me hardly any time at all, but for a beginner it would likely take a good bit longer.
bodynsoil says
I adore this color combination (and your nails to match) thank you for a quick and easy crochet pattern.
dancers4life says
Thank you so much!!
Sheila Hoffman says
I have made some using a different pattern but I can not find the patterns. So thank you for this one, I will make it as soon as I decide on the colour.
