It’s time for April showers and May flowers, friends! So, what better project to make than a shiny, sparkly jar to hold those flowers? This quick and easy DIY combines all the fun of glitter with the neat effect of faux mercury glass. Here’s how you can make your own in no time at all!
Materials:
– clear mason jar
– Krylon Looking Glass Spray
– Painters’ or washi tape
– Mod Podge {I used Gloss formula}
– Fine silver glitter
– paintbrush
Step 1: Spray the inside of your jar with Krylon Looking Glass.
I know it’s counter-intuitive, but yes, you really do spray it on the inside so that the outside will look the way you want it. Let it dry completely then spray another coat. You can spray as many or as few coats as you like depending on how mirror-like you want the jar to look.
Step 2: Tape off the bottom third of the jar, then give it a thick coat of Mod Podge.
Using Painters’ tape or washi tape ensures that it will peel back off easily when you’re done without leaving a residue on your jar. If you want more of your jar to be glittered, place your tape higher. Want stripes? Tape off several sections.
Step 3: Dip the jar into your glitter.
The finer the glitter, the better coverage you’re going to get. I used Martha Stewart sterling silver and I love how it turned out. Make sure you completely cover the entire area, then gently shake off the excess.
Step 4: Remove the tape.
It’s actually best to do this while the Mod Podge isn’t fully dry just in case you need to touch up any areas.
Once the Mod Podge section is dry underneath the glitter, your jar is ready to use! I love using mine as a vase and filling it with cheerful flowers. I’ve also used it at parties to hold plastic utensils. The only thing I wouldn’t do is have it actually fill it with food since although the supplies are non-toxic, they aren’t food safe.
So simple, right? And I love the way it sparkles and shines! It’ll look gorgeous in your home and just think how pretty it would be on an outdoor tablescape when it catches the sunlight! What do you think? Is this a project you’d like to try?

I really love this idea, it is super simple but the glitter at the bottom just makes a statement. This would be perfect for a shower or a gift idea. I really like this and will definitely be keeping this in mind!
