Wooden Block Firecrackers

Get ready to celebrate the 4th of July with these adorable DIY Wooden Block Firecrackers!

How to Make Wooden Block Firecrackers

This is a quick and easy craft project that is sure to make your mantel feel extra-festive for the 4th. Just grab the supplies below and let’s get started.

Image contains three wooden blocks painted red, white, and blue, and tied together in a bundle.

Materials

  • 1” square wooden dowel
  • small unfinished wooden star
  • red, white, and blue acrylic paint
  • white paint pen (optional)
  • paintbrush
  • twine
  • scissors
  • 20 gauge wire and wire cutters

Instructions

Cut your dowel into three unequal sections.

Mine are 4”, 4.5”, and 5”, but you can use whatever measurements you like.

Drill a small hole in the top of each dowel for the wire fuse.
Paint your blocks and wooden star.

You will need several coats to get full coverage. Let them dry completely before moving on.

Add details (optional).

I wanted my blue firecracker to have little white stars, so I drew them on with a paint pen. You can also create stripes, polka dots, or any other details you like.

Add wire fuses.

Curl your wire around a thin object like a pencil to create the fuse, then stick it into the hole at the top of the block. Mine were a good fit, so I didn’t need any adhesive, but you can use hot glue to help hold them in place.

Arrange your blocks and add twine.

Choose how you want your firecrackers to be arranged. You can glue them together, or leave them as is. Place the wooden star in front, then wrap the whole bundle with twine. Tie a knot/bow in the front.

  • If you don’t have the tools at home to cut your dowel, you can ask the employees at your hardware store to help!
  • Instead of wire fuses, you can also create them using rope or twine.
  • Feel free to personalize your project in any way you like.
  • You can make a larger version of the project by using a bigger dowel/piece of wood!
