Weighted Eye Pillow

Did you know September is Self-Care Awareness month? Let’s take some time to create a special project that promotes relaxation and a little bit of much-needed “me time,” a weighted eye pillow.

Image contains several project images of the weighted eye pillow along with the project name, intended for Pinterest.

How to Make a Weighted Eye Pillow

Let’s get started with this simple sewing project. Grab the materials below, and we’ll begin by piecing the front of the pillow. Even if you’re not an experienced sewer/quilter, I promise, you can do it!

Materials

Pro tip: Instead of cutting yardage, I used a roll of precut strips that are already 2.5” wide. The fabric comes from the same collection, so it’s all designed to coordinate. My choice for this project was the Enchanted Bloom Double Scoop from Andover Fabrics.

Instructions

Sew your five fabric strips together along the long vertical sides.

To do this, place two strips with right sides together and sew a 1/4” seam along one side. Open so that the strips are both right side up, then repeat, placing the next strip face down on top and sewing along the edge. When all five pieces are together forming a rectangle, press the seams so the fabric lays flat.

Center the template on top of your striped piece and cut out the pillow shape. Then, cut the same shape from your piece of coordinating fabric.

I recommend pinning the template to the fabric so that it doesn’t move while you cut.

Using the same template, cut two more shapes from your low-loft batting.

Layer your pieces.

Start with a piece of batting, then place the back of the mask/pillow on top of it with the right side facing up. Next, add the pillow front, face down, and finally put the second piece of batting on top. Pin together.

Sew a 1/4” seam around the edges of the pillow, leaving a small opening in one side.

You’ll need this opening to turn the fabric right side out, and to add the weighted filler.

Turn the pillow right side out and press.

Add Poly-Pellets to the inside of the pillow.

These weighted stuffing beads are the key to extra relaxation! You can also add a few drops of essential oil or even some dried lavender if you’d like your mask to be scented.

Topstitch around the edges of the mask, closing the opening.

As you sew, gently shift the pellets out of the way of the needle.

Now, your weighted eye pillow is ready to use! Bring on the shut-eye and self-care.

Crafting Tips

  • Because I love quilting and wanted to use more than one fun fabric print, I pieced the front of my pillow using five different strips. However, if you’re new to sewing and want to keep it simple, you can skip right to step two and start there instead. You’ll just cut out one solid piece for the front and one for the back.
  • If you’d like to add a strap to your pillow, you can add a piece of elastic. Just add it to your layers in step 4, in between the fabric pieces.
  • Add a few drops of an essential oil or some dried lavender to give your pillow a relaxing scent.
