Materials

  • unfinished wooden peg dolls (2.25” for adults, 1.75” for kids)
  • small unfinished wooden heart
  • unfinished wooden block
  • acrylic/multi-surface paint (red, pink, white)
  • fine tip permanent marker or paint pen
  • twine
  • paintbrushes
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun/glue sticks

Instructions

Paint the bodies of the peg dolls, along with the heart and the wooden block.

I used red for the dolls representing my husband and sons, and pink for myself to stay with a Valentine’s Day color scheme. However, you can feel free to use any colors you like to represent the members of your family. (As my 16-year-old son pointed out, the peg boys should actually be taller than me for an accurate representation of what our family looks like.)

Write or stamp a message on the block.

I chose to use faux calligraphy and write the word “love” on mine with a fine tip permanent marker. You could also write your last name, the word “family,” or any other message.

Glue the peg dolls to the block.

Wrap twine or ribbon around the peg dolls and tie a knot in the back. Then, glue the heart to the front of the family, on top of the twine.

I used red and white twine, but you can also use a natural brown.

Now, your little family is ready to display or give to a special person in your life!

Crafting Tips

  • For a more “farmhouse” style appearance, you can distress the block and pegs, either by sanding or by applying dark brown paint to areas that would naturally get more wear and tear.
  • For larger families, you’ll need a longer base block.
  • Feel free to arrange your pegs in any order. You can place kids on either side of the parents, or some on each side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get the wooden block?

Mine is a square wooden dowel cut into smaller sections. However, you could also try using a block from a stacking tower game.

What if I can’t write neatly?

Be sure to check out my faux calligraphy tutorials (and books)! You’ll be surprised by what you can do! Of course, you can also leave your block blank or use alphabet stamps to spell out words instead.
