How to Make Conversation Heart Coasters

These coasters are so fun to make and to use. You can personalize them by writing your favorite conversation heart-inspired phrases and using any fabrics you like. I chose to use pastel colors that reminded me of the candy version, but you can use anything colors or patterns you want. Just grab the supplies listed below, and let’s get started!

Materials

Instructions

Iron a 5” square of fusible adhesive to the back of the fabric you’d like to use for the heart.
Cut out a heart shape.

You can use a half-heart or full heart template if you like. I couldn’t find mine, so I just folded a piece of paper in half and freehanded a pattern.

Print a message onto your heart with a fabric marker.

Have fun choosing your favorite phrases! Here are the ones I picked.

Iron the heart in the center of a white fabric square.
Place a 5” square of batting under the fabric square.

The fabric piece should be right side up.

Stitch around the edges of the heart with a 1/8” seam.

I chose to do this with thread that matched my heart colors.

Place a colored 5” square on top of the heart square with the right sides together. Sew around all 4 sides with a 1/4” seam, leaving a 2” opening.
Turn the coaster right side out and topstitch around all for edges with a 1/8” seam.

Crafting Tips

  • Make sure you use a permanent fabric marker so that the ink doesn’t run when it gets wet!
  • This project is a great way to use charm pack squares! They are pre cut to the 5” size, so some of the work is already done for you.
  • Tie a ribbon around a set of these coasters and give them away as a gift for your neighbor, coworker, friend, or sweetheart!

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabrics did you use?

Three of my hearts use fabrics from my own collections: Bloom and Sew and Sunny Honey, which will be available in stores later this year. The fourth is from Color Me Pretty by Stephanie Organes.

What fabric marker did you use?

My favorite is the Missouri Star Quilt Co. black permanent fabric marker. It doesn’t bleed, and it doesn’t need to be heat set.
