How to Make Plush Pocket Hearts

This is a simple sewing project that takes less than half an hour to create. It’s also a great way to use some of your fabric scraps! Just grab the supplies below and let’s get started.

Materials

  • fabric: 2 matching 6” x 6” squares, and a coordinating 6” x 8” rectangle
  • free half heart template
  • scissors
  • Poly-Fil
  • sewing machine
  • needle and thread
  • ribbon

Instructions

Cut two matching heart shapes.

Fold the fabric squares in half vertically and use the free template to cut the half heart shape. Open the fabric to reveal two hearts.

I get my fabric from Missouri Star Quilt Company, and I have a special discount offer for my friends – save 25% on any MSQC order using this link! The discount will automatically apply at checkout.

Fold the rectangle in half horizontally and press the fold.

This should give you a folded piece that measures 6” across and 4” tall.

Lay one heart right side up and lay the folded rectangle on top, covering the bottom half.

The fold should be ON TOP and the open part on the bottom. Make sure that the pattern of your folded fabric is right side up.

Place the other heart face down on top.

This will create a “sandwich” with the folded piece in the middle. Pin the layers together.

Sew around the edges with a 1/4” seam, leaving a 2” opening.
Turn right side out.

Before turning, I like to clip the bottom point off, and snip a few slits in the fabric near the “v” at the top. Be careful not to cut as far in as the stitches.

Fill with Poly-Fil.

Hand stitch the opening closed.

Optional: Add a ribbon bow.

You can place this at the top of the heart, in the center of the pocket, or anywhere you like.

Now your plush pocket heart is complete and it’s time to tuck something special into the pocket! Write a little note, or slide a gift card or a sweet treat inside for your Valentine.

Crafting Tips

  • Different fabric combinations will make your hearts look totally unique! Don’t limit yourself to Valentine fabric, you can use the recipient’s favorite colors or anything from your scrap bin.
  • You can make your pocket larger or smaller based on where you position it. For a large pocket, cover about 2/3 of the heart. For a smaller one, cover half of the heart.
