Personalized DIY Hair Color With eSalon

Raise your hand if your hair isn’t its natural color! My hand is up for sure. Anyone who has met me in the last five years has never seen my actual hair color, and it’s been so long since I’ve seen it myself that I had to go on a hunt for old photos. In my case, I don’t have hardly any grey to cover {yet!}, I just prefer a darker color with more of a red tint than what I naturally have. Just for fun, here’s a look at my pre-dyed look way back in 2011, which was the last time I saw that color…

I’m guessing a lot of you are also in the “I color my hair” boat, and I don’t know about you, friends, but I always thought the only options were to spend $100+ in a salon, or try to pick something decent from endless aisles of boxed color at the store. Guess what? I was wrong! There’s another option, and I found out first hand that it’s just plain fabulous. {I’m not even kidding. I am so hooked on this, it’s ridiculous.} eSalon is the first and only customized mass hair color service in the world. If you live in the US, UK, Canada, or Europe, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

eSalon launched in September 2010, and here’s how it works. All you have to do is go to and answer questions about your hair, like what your natural color is, whether you’ve previously dyed or treated your hair, what color you’re looking for, and more. Then, upload up to three clear, well-lit photos of yourself showing your current hairstyle and color. The expert colorists at eSalon will review the order and create a unique, individually blended hair color formula just for you, using professional ingredients typically only available in salons. Your color history, hair texture, percentage of gray, and more are all considered when your color is created. If the colorists have any questions, they’ll call to chat with you personally before creating your color blend, like they did with me. You also have ongoing access to the colorists by phone or email, so if you have any questions or concerns, you can contact them at any time. Finally, the color, along with personal application instructions, will ship within three days and show up at your door!

Here’s the best part, it’s risk free!

Each custom color application is only US $19.95 (£14.00) and comes with a 100% satisfaction money-back guarantee. If you are unhappy with your color, eSalon will reformulate it for free or refund you the price of the product. If you are happy with it, the great news is that eSalon will keep your color history on file to use for future color applications. That way, you can get the same exact color shipped to you again {and again} or you can ask for specific changes if you want to try something different!

Now that you know how it works, let me tell you about my personal experience with eSalon. I followed the full procedure by registering on the website, answering questions, and sharing photos of myself to show my current style and color Here are the pictures I shared:

I know it’s ideal to use photos without anyone else in them, but these were the most recent pictures I had of myself and I felt like they were well-lit, clear, and showed my current hair well enough for the colorists to see what I was starting with. Before long, I got a phone call from eSalon’s head stylist Estelle who was working on my order. She expressed her concern that the color I indicated that I wanted would turn out much too dark for me…darker than she thought I was going for. She also thought that the shade of red I was interested in had the wrong undertones for my skin and suggested going with a Medium Brown Copper Mahogany. I deferred to her expertise, because I figured she knew best, plus with the 100% satisfaction guarantee, if I didn’t like the color she created, I could get it redone. A few days later, my box arrived and here’s what was inside.

There were two bottles of color, one for the roots and one for the tips of my hair, two developer bottles, a packet of shampoo, a packet of conditioner, stain guard, stain remover, a brush, two pairs of gloves, and even a tube of Tinted Love Color Extending Shampoo to help maintain my color long term. {I may or may not have run around the house singing “Tinted Love” all day long and driven my family bananas}. I loved how the bottles of color had my name on them…I get a kick out of the little things. Finally, there was a personalized instruction booklet telling me exactly what steps to follow to get awesome results. Being a total chicken, instead of following them myself, I asked my mom to come and help out, which she graciously did. She is no stranger to boxed hair dye herself, and when she saw everything that was in my kit, she was super-impressed. We worked together and followed the steps in my instructions, then after washing and conditioning, I dried and styled my hair. Here’s the result…

I abso-freaking-lutely love it!!! I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the color! I’ve been trying to get just the right auburn color for years, and this is my favorite shade I’ve ever had. It’s not too dark, not purple-y, not too brassy…it’s just right! I couldn’t be happier with this color or the whole experience. The process was easy to do, I got great, even coverage, and the products didn’t have an overwhelming smell like some dyes do.

I am most definitely going to use eSalon again and again, and the best part is that since they have this color on file in my account, I will get the same results next time. There’s even a plan you can sign up for where you get regularly scheduled auto delivery so that your hair color shows up right when you need it, and you save 20%! What do you think of what eSalon has to offer? Seriously, you guys, it’s fabulous. It’s totally worth the $20…a huge savings from salon prices but so much more personalized than a box! However, I showed this to my daughter who dyes her hair a lot. She is going to try it out. Thanks for sharing with us!! Love the color!
