DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint

Summer is here, and if your kids enjoy creating colorful sidewalk art, I’ve got a great project for you: DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint! This paint is quick, easy, and inexpensive to make, and you probably already have all the supplies on hand. It’s also washable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. Here’s how to create your own.

  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4-5 drops food coloring

  • Mix together equal parts water and corn starch. Stir until smooth and blended.
  • Add 4-5 drops of food coloring and stir.
  • Store unused paint in an airtight container.

We started out with 1/4 cup of cornstarch and 1/4 cup of water per paint color, but if you want to make a larger batch, you can increase the amounts as much as you like. Just make sure you’re adding equal amounts of those two main ingredients, and you’ll be good to go.

Once your paint is well stirred, it’s time to create! Use paintbrushes of all sizes to create images, words, designs, and more on the sidewalk. We had fun with a paint splatter effect too, just by letting paint drip off the brush. As the paint dries, it will have a bright, chalky appearance. To get colors like orange and purple, just mix together your primary colors of food coloring. For darker paint, add more drops of color, or add fewer to create pastels. There’s no wrong way to create this fun paint.

When you’re finished creating, the paint can be stored in airtight containers and be used again another time. Just give it a good stir to re-mix the ingredients first, because they will separate while being stored. If you try this, I’d love to see pictures of what you create! Be sure to share them in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook group so we can all be inspired.
