Scrappy Stars – Word of the Year

Have you set a word of intention for 2024? Here’s a fun little project to give you a tangible reminder you can enjoy throughout the year.

Image is a collage of project photos intended for Pinterest.

How to Make Scrappy Stars

The first step in this project is to choose your word of the year for 2024. Think of what attribute you want to develop, or what you want more of in your life. Here are some ideas of words to choose from:

joy, adventure, courage, explore, family, create, brave, strength, hope, grow, focus, organize, compassion, grace, imagine, calm, gratitude, give, forgive, faith, celebrate, persist, play, passion, trust, possibility, reach

Then, grab the materials below, and let’s get started!

Materials

Image contains teal fabric, white batting, a pair of orange handled scissors, and a black fabric marker on a white table with a few pieces of faux pine.

Instructions

Cut two 5” star shapes from fabric using pinking shears.

You can freehand a star shape, trace a star-shaped cookie cutter, or print out and trace a star silhouette from the internet. I sized mine so that I could use it with precut 5” charm squares, but you can make your star whatever size you like.

Cut a slightly smaller star from low loft batting.

You can use regular scissors for this step.

Write your word on a scrap of fabric, then trim it with pinking shears.

I always use my Missouri Star Quilt Co fabric marker, because it doesn’t bleed into the fabric, and it’s permanent. There’s no heat setting required. You can print your word, write in cursive, or even get fancy with faux calligraphy.

Sew your word onto one of the fabric stars.

Just position the word wherever you’d like it to be (I purposely put mine on a slight angle), then sew around the fabric 1/4” from the edges to secure it in place.

Stack the top star, the batting, and the bottom star, then sew around the edges with a 1/4” seam.

I did the sewing on my machine, but you can also hand stitch if you prefer.

Add a twine hanger.

I used a large eye tapestry needle to thread the twine through the top of my star.

Add a bow.

You can use twine, ribbon, fabric scraps, or anything else you like as an accent.

Now, your star is ready to display all year long and help you remember your special word.

Crafting Tips

  • Your star can be any color you like, and so can the fabric where you write your word!
  • For a thicker star, you can use two or more layers of batting.
  • Create a star for each member of your family, then string them onto a piece of twine to create a garland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t sew?

You can machine stitch, hand sew, or use glue to hold the layers of fabric and batting together.

What if I don’t have a word for the year?

You can write anything you want on your star, or nothing at all. Instead of a word, you could write the year, or just choose a message you like.
