Image is a collage of three ornaments made from acrylic blanks and assorted fabrics, intended for Pinterest.

How to Make Acrylic and Fabric Ornaments

These ornaments are very quick to create, and can be personalized in so many ways! Each one is totally unique with its own combination of fabric and words. Choose your favorite fabrics, grab the materials below, and let’s get started.

Materials

  • Clear acrylic ornament blanks
  • 5” fabric squares
  • paint pens
  • Fabric Mod Podge
  • sponge brush
  • scissors
  • twine

Instructions

Remove the protective film from one side of the acrylic blank.
Apply a thin coat of Fabric Mod Podge to the acrylic, then press it onto a fabric square.

If you don’t have Fabric Mod Podge, the regular matte formula will work too. Or, if you want some sparkle, try Glitter or Extreme Glitter Mod Podge! Let it dry for a few minutes before moving on.

Use fabric scissors to trim away the excess fabric.

Cut as close to the edges of the acrylic blank as you can.

If you are using fabric with a featured image, like this deer, you can choose to skip the next step and simply add your hanger.

Remove the protective cover from the top side of the acrylic blank.

Try not to touch the acrylic surface, because fingerprints will interfere with the paint pens.

Use a paint marker to hand letter a name or phrase on the top side of the ornament.

Feel free to add snowflakes, swirls, or any kind of embellishments you like to make your ornament one-of-a-kind. One of my favorite things is choosing fabric that is someone’s favorite color or has a special illustration, like these donuts that are absolutely perfect for my donut-loving son.

Licensed fabrics that represent a sports team, a college, or a favorite character can be extra special.

Optional: Glue a bow at the top of the ornament for extra embellishment.

Use a sharp tool to poke a hole in the fabric where the hole is in the acrylic blank, then add a twine or cord hanger.

Then, your ornament is ready to display on the tree, or to tie onto a package.

Crafting Tips

  • A thin coat of Mod Podge is all you need. Using too much may cause the ornament to appear cloudy.
  • Try this same technique, but substitute scrapbook paper for the fabric.
  • Instead of writing on the ornament top, you can also use stickers or vinyl decals (ie: cut with a Cricut).

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find acrylic ornament blanks?

I got mine in a 10 pack at Hobby Lobby. You can also find them at Amazon or other local craft stores.
