‘Tis the season for Ugly Sweaters, and here in our house, we love making our own one-of-a-kind masterpieces! Today, I’m super excited to share with you the DIY Ugly Sweater I created for myself this year! It’s based on the idea of gingerbread cookies on a cookie sheet, plus a bunch of festive embellishments to make it as gaudy as possible. Here’s how I made it and you can too!
Solid color sweater or shirt
Gingerbread men felt ornament kit OR brown felt
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Making Your Ugly Sweater
Step 1: Glue or sew your felt piece in the center of your sweater.
Step 2: Add gingerbread cookie shapes.
I was fortunate enough to find an ornament kit that had these pre-cut, so all I had to do was glue them on. However, you can also cut the basic shapes out of brown felt. A good tip for getting the shape right is to trace a cookie cutter!
Step 3: Add decorations to the cookie shapes.
Once again, the kit provided everything for this; all I had to do was peel and stick the adhesive pieces of felt for their clothes, faces, and accents. However, if you don’t have a kit, you can do this yourself using fabric paint and/or small pieces of felt.
Step 4: Outline the gray “cookie sheet” with garland.
I found this garland at Target with ornaments already attached!
Step 6: Attach beaded garland around the neckline and accent with bows.
You can use any other types of embellishments you like too, to make it totally your own! I also added miniature stockings, one on each sleeve.
Step 7: Attach tinsel garland around the cuffs and hem.
I chose green, but silver, gold, or any other color would be fun too!
What do you think? I am so incredibly excited about how this turned out. I can’t wait to have an excuse to wear it…but then again, does a person really need an excuse for something this fabulous? Be sure to check out the other DIY Ugly Sweater ideas I’m sharing here on the website, and to share your own over in the Amy Latta & Friends Facebook group! Tune in to Good Day PA tomorrow on abc27 to see us modeling and talking about all three of this year’s ugly sweater creations.
And of course, don’t forget to pin this project for later and to share with your friends!
