How to Make Patriotic Clothespin Stars

This is a simple project for crafters of all ages, and you probably already have most of the supplies in your home. Just gather the materials below, and let’s get started.

Materials

  • wooden clothespins (5)
  • acrylic/multi-surface paint
  • paintbrush
  • felt
  • scissors
  • buttons
  • hot glue gun and glue sticks OR craft glue
  • small piece of cardboard

Instructions

Remove the metal springs from five wooden clothespins.
Paint the clothespin halves.

I chose to paint mine red, but you can also use white, blue, metallics, or any other color you like.

Glue the top portions of the clothespins together to form a point.

This will give you five “v” shapes.

Arrange the clothespins to form a five-pointed star and glue the edges together.

I used hot glue because it dries quickly and holds well. However, if you are working with younger crafters, you can use adhesive glue dots or craft glue.

Cut a 2 1/4” circle from cardboard and glue a 2 1/4” felt circle on top. Glue the circle to the top of the star.

This will give your star added stability.

Add buttons on top of the felt circle for additional embellishment.

Mine are star-shaped, but you can use anything you like.

Optional: If you want to hang your star, you can tie a piece of string, ribbon, or twine to the top point.

Crafting Tips

  • While you can certainly make just one star, why not make more? You can alternate the colors and display them in groups of three.
  • It’s easiest to paint the wood before gluing the points together.
  • You can also make a six-pointed star using the same basic technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I trace a 2 1/4” circle?

If you have a compass on hand, that’s a great method to use. If not, find something round that’s approximately that size in your craft room or elsewhere in the house to trace.

Where did you get star shaped buttons?

My local Walmart!

Where can these be displayed?

Anywhere you like! They are fun to hang up or to place on a shelf, mantle, or tiered tray.
